SAFETY WEEK: ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign supports Balfour Beatty US Zero Harm program

Dallas — As part of the company’s never-ending commitment to accepting nothing less than Zero Harm for anyone coming into contact with its work, Balfour Beatty US Joined forces with more than 60 national and global construction firms to sponsor Safety Week 2017. Balfour Beatty teams and trade partners across the country took a stand for safety and reflected on what’s most important — going home safe to their families every day.

New for 2017, Balfour Beatty’s Safety Week activities incorporated the company’s ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign. Designed to support Balfour Beatty’s ongoing global Zero Harm safety program, ‘See Something, Say Something’ reinforces one of the most simple, yet critical safety principles: If anyone observes unsafe conditions or behaviors on a worksite, it is imperative that they speak up or report the situation.

“We’re proud to join the construction industry each year in support of Safety Week because we all share a responsibility to each other and to our families to do everything we humanly can to ensure that everyone returns home safely at the end of each day — unharmed,” said Ray Bond, president and CEO of Balfour Beatty US. “Saving someone from injury or even potentially life threatening situations isn’t always a dramatically heroic effort. It can be as simple as reminding someone they need to wear gloves, or to tie off properly, or even just politely asking someone if there is a safer way to accomplish a task.”

Too often there are construction workers who don’t feel empowered to speak up when they see something they know doesn’t meet safety standards. Sometimes workers rationalize that others are too experienced to put themselves at risk or perhaps they fear retaliation for speaking up about workers from other trades or those who are more senior. With ‘See Something, Say Something’, Balfour Beatty strives to empower every person to voice their concerns without fear, while simultaneously facilitating a culture of positive reinforcement for safe behavior on the job.

Safety Week provides an opportunity for Balfour Beatty to thank its workforce and partners for supporting safety year-round and to recognize their commitment to remaining injury free. Throughout the week, Balfour Beatty project teams around the country will recognize safety heroes, hold safety stand-downs and conduct safety trainings.
