AWC’s self-directed study program tops 100 eCourses

Leesburg, Va. — The American Wood Council’s (AWC) self-directed study program now has 100 available online courses (eCourses) about wood. Course areas range from the use and application of AWC standards, building codes, design considerations, and green buildings and materials.

The program was originally launched in November 2014, with nine courses.

“Wood is the go-to material for builders in North America because it’s easy to build with, strong, and renewable. We also have some of the highest construction standards in the world. AWC is committed to making sure code officials and designers are familiar with the latest applications of wood design and construction,” said AWC Senior Director of Education Michelle Kam-Biron. “This milestone of reaching 100 eCourses is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of AWC’s outstanding education team.”

As tall mass timber buildings have gained national attention, AWC has incorporated mass timber design considerations in the education program. Three mass timber eCourses are available online, “Tall Wood Structures: Current Trends and Related Code and Standard Changes,” “Historical, Current and Future Tall Wood Buildings,” and “Tall Wood Structures: Fire Resistance Design Primer for Mass Timber Construction.” AWC will also be offering an upcoming series of three live webinars on tall wood buildings:

• Thursday, March 8 – Fire Tests in Support of Tall Mass Timber Buildings
• Friday, March 16 – CLT Adhesive Tests in Support of Tall Mass Timber Buildings
• Thursday, April 5 – Outcomes of ICC Tall Wood Ad Hoc Committee: Proposals and Discussions

AWC is approved as a Preferred Provider of continuing education through International Code Council’s (ICC) Preferred Provider Program (PPP). Fifty percent of the CEUs required for ICC certification renewal must be earned from training by ICC or an ICC Preferred Provider. AWC is also an approved provider of continuing education through the AIA Continuing Education System, and AWC’s education programs are registered with National Council of Structural Engineers Association’s Diamond Approval Program.
