Atlanta recreation and aquatic center topping out includes VR stations

Atlanta — On March 23, the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation and Winter Johnson FS360, a joint venture, celebrated “topping out” of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center. Attendees at the topping out were treated to virtual reality stations where they could try on Winter Johnson FS360 full-immersion VR goggles and get a 360-degree view of the completed gymnasium. City of Atlanta officials, subcontractors, and construction staff experienced an aerial tour of the site via drone-recorded video footage and a “way-finding-point” tour offering participants the ability to see what the completed space will look like on mobile tablets.

The design-build project, let by Winter Johnson FS360, will fill the void that the closing of the original Martin Luther King, Jr. Natatorium left when it closed in 2012. Situated between the King Memorial MARTA station and the Edgewood Avenue corridor, the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center promises to become a focal point for the area’s dynamic and growing neighborhoods. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center will offer visitors top-notch recreation facilities. Specific features will include:

  • A zero-entry family fun pool with play equipment features
  • Lap swimming lanes
  • An elevated running/walk track overlooking the gymnasium and pool
  • A climbing wall
  • Outdoor terrace
  • Multiple community and meeting rooms
  • Off-street parking

The forthcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center is one of many recreation centers and pools built by Winter Construction and the other entities of the Winter Johnson FS360 joint venture. “Our team is thrilled at the progress we’ve made on this much-anticipated project. We are proud and honored to be a part of creating this much-needed center and continuing to serve the Atlanta community,” says CEO of Winter Construction and a Managing Partner of Winter Johnson Group, Brent Reid.
