On the Rise Awards, Promotions, and New Hires

    Aine Brazil, P.E., F.SEI, LEED AP, vice chairman, Thornton Tomasetti, was awarded the 2016 Homer Gage Balcom Award from the ASCE Metropolitan Section. The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of achievement in the structural engineering of buildings, along with a commitment to the advancement of the structural engineering discipline of civil engineering.

    Brian Funkhouser, P.E., president and CEO of Buchart Horn, was honored with the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America. This service award recognizes Funkhouser’s exceptional character, which has made an impact on the lives of youth through his service to New Birth of Freedom Council.

    Kurt Levins, P.E., joined GeoStructures as a Northeast Region sales engineer, responsible for business development and sales, working with customers to develop design-build solutions through the use of ground improvement technologies. Jeff Rickard, P.E., joined GeoStructures as a design-build sales engineer, primarily working with engineers, owners, and general contractors in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Juan Salinas, EIT, joined GeoStructures as a design engineer, responsible for supporting GeoStructures’ customers by reviewing preliminary designs and preparing final engineering designs. Curtis Kanewske, EIT, joined GeoConstructors (GeoStructures sister company) as an assistant project manager, responsible for developing project cost estimates, schedules, daily field progress, and quality control.

    Waggoner Engineering added Holly Montgomery as a new graduate engineer in the firm’s water resources and coastal programs department. She will focus primarily on hydraulic studies for bridge replacement projects and other drainage-related projects and studies. Jennifer Sloan Ziegler, Ph.D., EI, ENV SP, joined Waggoner Engineering as an engineering intern in the firm’s water resources and coastal programs department. Ziegler will lend her water resources and coastal restoration research experience in the Gulf of Mexico region, combined with her environmental and public policy expertise, to serve Waggoner’s state and local agency clients.

    Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) promoted Melissa C. Mack, P.E., and Johnathan Terrazas, P.E., to the position of team leader. Mack is LAN’s lead hydraulic and transient modeling engineer. For the last 15 years, she has provided water system hydraulic and transient analysis for municipal water systems throughout Texas and the Midwest. Terrazas leads the firm’s structural and bridge team. He has more than 13 years of experience inspecting, planning, designing, and load rating highway and railway structures. David Wemmer, P.E., joined LAN as California rail and transit director. With more than 36 years of experience in the railway industry, his expertise ranges from conceptual studies to detailed design, preparation of contract documents, environmental documents, and construction services.

    Dewberry promoted Brian Hollinger, P.E., to associate vice president in the firm’s Gainesville, Va., office. He has more than 25 years of experience related to the concrete, civil, and heavy highway industries. Dave Maune, Ph.D., PSM, PS, GS, CP, CFM, was promoted to associate vice president at Dewberry. Maune is a photogrammetrist with the firm’s geospatial group and a recognized authority in the fields of geodesy, photogrammetry, lidar, and IFSAR. Dewberry promoted Katherine Dewkett, P.E., to senior associate and department manager of the site/civil transportation group in the firm’s New York City office. With more than 30 years of experience, she is an expert in bridge and highway design, environmental remediation, permitting, floodplain analysis, site plans, and stormwater management. Matthew West, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, was promoted to associate in Dewberry’s Raleigh, N.C., office. As a member of the firm’s water group, West specializes in municipal infrastructure, utility, and site/civil design. Also promoted at Dewberry: Chris dePascale, P.E., and James C. Filson, P.E., to associate vice presidents in the firm’s Fairfax, Va., office. dePascale is a senior civil engineer with nearly 20 years of experience. His responsibilities include project management, utility engineering, permitting, environmental coordination, development of contract documents, and support during construction. Filson has more than 25 years of experience in transportation and hydraulic engineering, with extensive knowledge in drainage design, bridge approach design, and stream restoration assessment and design. Erin Gallimore joined the firm’s Raleigh, N.C., office as a staff engineer. She will support the firm’s water group.
