Water Treatment

AMEC Earth & Environmental, Lakewood, Colo., was selected by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to assist with the cleanup of the Clear Creek Superfund site west of Denver. The creek runs through a popular recreational area and it provides drinking water for more than 250,000 people living in Denver. It also is contaminated with heavy metals from more than 70 nearby mines (most are inactive). AMEC will develop systems to collect contaminated surface water and groundwater, and to convey that water to an existing treatment facility.

Berryman & Henigar, Sacramento, Calif., was awarded a contract by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District to provide construction management services for the West Sacramento Force Main portion of what is known as the Lower Northwest Interceptor. The force main is a $71 million section of a major, $400 million endeavor to update the region’s wastewater system. Berryman’s services will concentrate on a 20,700-foot segment of dual, 60-inch pipes.

The Long Beach Calif., office of SCS Engineers was hired for a $300,000 project by the city of Riverside (Calif.) Public Works Department to provide civil engineering services for various capital improvement projects at the city’s Water Quality Control Plant. The contract includes upgrading, expanding, and monitoring the Tequesquite Landfill’s gas collection/ control systems.

Transportation

TEI Engineers & Planners, Lake Mary, Fla., was hired by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as the engineer of record for a design-build project to further develop an intelligent transportation system (ITS) for the state of Florida, known as iFlorida. TEI will provide ITS/Systems engineering and communication support, as well as traffic design and engineering-related support services for the project, which is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the FDOT.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation hired Vollmer Associates, LLP, of Albany, N.Y., to develop improvements to several highwayrailroad grade crossings throughout the state. The firm will inspect and evaluate the crossings; prepare conceptual design reports and preliminary engineering plans; and develop contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Vollmer also will provide technical assistance during construction.

PBS&J, Orlando, Fla., was selected by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to provide construction engineering and inspection services for a $40 million project to widen I-55 between DeSoto County, Miss., and Memphis, Tenn. The project will more than double the size of the highway from two lanes in each direction to five total lanes.
